DISTRICT ASSEMBLY

WOW.....

I had a wonderful day with friends and colleagues in Rotary and can only say a very big thankyou to all of them for all their support and help. We still have the future of Rotary in Our hands and we have to amke sure we get it done right...but we will move on on July 1st to make sure that we continue to ' Build Communities and Bridge Continents'

The District Assembly is an annual event and is something we as DGE's have to organise to filter the messages of the coming year out to the membership.
And the Rotary Club of Machen won the attendance shield...well done Machen

Plymouth...Conference site visit

8am start to Plymouth, Site Visit to dot a few more i's and cross a few more t's.

We are so lucky with the weather today..its normally raining when we get there...so fingers crossed.
House of Friendship is going to be a bit different this year so Haydn from my club is coming so he can get a feel for the venue since the changes..then eating at the Copthorne and meeting a charity for coffee before that!

Christine the Conference Registrar will be busy with the hotel too...so a full day and there and back in 11 hours...I might be a bit tired after all that...but good training for the official visit trips around Wales!

and the food testing was sooooo worthwhile at the Copthorne Hotel...
Another box ticked and sorted...

Pontllainfraith Anniversary Dinner Wednesday 19th May 2010

The Pontllanfraith club celebrated a wonderful evening celebrating 25 years of service. President Bob and the club celebrated in style and we all had a superb night at the Maes Manor

Founder member Alans overview of the club's activities during the past 25 years was fun and funny and Foundation Trustee David Morgan was the main speaker and he highlighted how the End Polio Campaign is doing well.
Three local young ladies provided a musical entertainment which was wonderful.
As well as all that the night was a rightly time to make a member of their club a Paul Harris Fellow and he was totally shocked and didn't know it was to be that night....but he was delighted.
What a wonderful Night Good luck for the next 25 years..

Planning

I am busy planning and still researching for JULY 1st but spent a lot of Tuesday tidying up my presentation for District Assembly....but in making others who do not know or appreciate why we muct End Polio Now...i was looking for more info....and I shar eit with you my friends...we can all make a difference..xx

In January 2009 - Bill Gates pledged a further $200 million to Rotary International's campaign to End Polio Now. Why?

PolioPlus, the most ambitious program in Rotary’s history, is the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedicated to eradicating polio. For more than 20 years, Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease. Today, PolioPlus and its role in the initiative is recognized worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation in pursuit of a humanitarian goal.
In addition to providing financial and volunteer support, Rotary works to urge support from other public and private sector partners. This includes the campaign to End Polio Now, inspired by the extraordinary challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Challenges to polio eradication
Health experts agree that these primary challenges must be overcome in order to reach the goal of polio eradication:
•Halting the spread of the poliovirus in the four remaining endemic countries (Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan), which continue to export it to polio-free areas
•Curbing the intense spread of the poliovirus in northern Nigeria and western Uttar Pradesh, India
•Rapidly stopping polio outbreaks in previously polio-free countries
•Addressing low routine-immunization rates and surveillance gaps in polio-free areas
•Maintaining funding and political commitment to implement the eradication strategies
Four key strategies for stopping poliovirus transmission:
1.Routine immunization
High infant-immunization coverage with four doses of oral polio vaccine (OPV) in the first year of life is critical. Routine immunization is essential because it’s the primary way that polio-free countries protect their children from the threat of imported polio.
2.National Immunization Days
For decades, Rotary’s PolioPlus program has been one of the driving forces during National Immunization Days, or NIDs. Rotarians are involved in myriad ways before, during, and after an NID, by providing funds for millions of drops of vaccine, promoting upcoming campaigns in the community, distributing vaccine to local health centers, serving as monitors, working with local officials to reach every child, and participating in surveillance efforts.
3.Surveillance
Rotarians play an important role in working with health workers, pediatricians, and others to find, report, and investigate cases of acute flaccid paralysis in timely manner (ideally within 48 hours of onset). PolioPlus sometimes helps fund containers that preserve the integrity of stool samples during transport to laboratories. The program has also played a leading role in providing equipment for the global poliovirus laboratory.
4.Targeted mop-up campaigns
Rotary’s support of mop-up campaigns is similar to NID volunteering, but on a smaller, often “house-to-house,” scale.

May 13th 2010

A very kind and committed President Bill of RC Mumbles lost his dear wife and today was the funeral, A lovely service with a lovely eulogy and lots of friends around to support him.

How wonderful it is to see Rotary supporting their colleagues in Good and sad times...I am sure Bill is safe in the hand sof his friends who will continue that support when he needs it...xx

12th May 2010 - a trip to Narberth and Whitland.

Well its a long journey but worth it to give clubs a choice.
A meeting to ask clubs if they wish to apply for a Membership and Marketing Campaign Grant...Areas 1 and 2 and some from Area 3 invited and some of us are staying for a meal after the meeting with the RC of Narberth and Whitland.

The clubs decide to not apply and thats democracy at work...all in a week of democracy at work nationally!

Anyway a long drive home and time to ponder what had been said and agreed! But a good night of Fellowship and making new friends too.
